New Marvel Cinematic Universe Board Games
Pictopia: Marvel Cinematic Universe Edition
In Pictopia: Marvel Cinematic Universe Edition, from Ravensburger, Marvel fans assemble to test their knowledge in this action-packed, picture-trivia card game.
There are 200 questions from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with trivia about earth’s mightiest heroes, the greatest Guardians of the galaxy, and all realms in between. Players earn tokens for each correct answer, and tokens build up over time for even bigger payout. The first player to collect enough tokens in their Personal Scoring Pile is the winner.
The game is set up by placing three cards face up with one token below each card. These are the Active Cards. The remaining cards are placed in a draw pile and the remaining tokens in a token supply nearby. On their turn, a player chooses one of the Active Cards to play based upon the pictures on the cards. (Later in the game, players may select an Active Card based upon the number of tokens that accumulate under the card, because those will help boost their score.) When an Action Card is selected, the player takes all of the tokens under the card.
Next, the player rolls the four-sided die. The player to the left will read the question on the card based upon the symbol rolled on the die. For a Pick 1 question, there is only ONE correct answer on the card. Pick 2 and Pick 3 questions to have TWO or THREE correct answers, respectively. But watch out for the Ultimate Pick One questions…. You must wager your tokens to answer them. Answer wrong, and risk losing some – or all! – of your tokens. But answer correct and potentially win big and take the game! If the question is answered correctly, the player places the tokens in their Personal Scoring Pile. If the question is answered incorrectly, the tokens are returned to the token supply. You may also choose to pass before the question is read. The Active Card will be discarded, and all of its accumulated tokens are returned to the token supply.
After each turn, a new Active Card is replaced in the lineup, and one token is added under each of the Active Cards. There is no limit to the number of tokens an Active Card may accumulate.
The first player to collect enough tokens in their Personal Scoring Pile wins. The number of tokens required to win is based upon the number of players in the game.
This is a really fun game, especially for the die-hard fans of the Marvel films. With four questions per card, there is good replayability value with this game. However, as with all other trivia games, there will be a finite number of plays once all of the questions and answers have been read. With an MSRP of $14.99, you definitely get a good bang for your buck. And, an added bonus, if you subscribe to the Ravensburger newsletter, you get $5 off your first purchase!

Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game
While Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game, by Upper Deck, is a deck-building game primarily set in the Marvel Comics universe, the most recent expansion, Spider-Man Homecoming is the first expansion to foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe by migrating from the traditional comic book art and characters to movie stills from the film.
Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game is a semi-cooperative deck-building game for up to 5 players. Players choose a team of heroes to fight against a Mastermind and the Villains aligned with them. Players win the game if the Mastermind is beaten four times, and lose if the Mastermind is able to complete their Scheme. Imagine each scenario where heroes battle villains in an overall scheme or story arc, it is much like a story told on the pages of a Marvel comic book! Over nearly 5 years, with numerous expansions, and even a Villains core set where you play as the villains trying to beat the heroes, there are abundant combinations, making this a highly replayable game. There is also a solo variant where a player will try to defeat a Mastermind before all of their heroes are defeated or the Mastermind completes their scheme.
The game is set up by selecting Heroes, Villains, a Mastermind, and a Scheme, which is an overall plot that the Mastermind is focused on, much like a story arc from a comic book or MCU movie. Each player starts with their own deck of basic cards. At the start of your turn, you play the top card of the Villain Deck for Villains to invade the city, capture Bystanders, and create special events. Then, you play Hero cards from your hand to generate Attack, Recruit Points, and special abilities. You use your Attack to defeat Villains. You use Recruit Points to recruit better Heroes for your deck. When a Master Strike is revealed, this indicates a massive attack from the Mastermind. When a Scheme Twist is revealed, this will trigger bad stuff that the Mastermind or the other Villains will do to the heroes. Every Scheme card has a part that says “Evil Wins,” which tells you how the Mastermind completes their Scheme. If the Scheme is completed, then the Mastermind wins the game, and everyone loses! If the Heroes defeat the Mastermind, all the players win the game for the forces of good! In addition, defeating Villains and rescuing Bystanders earns each player Victory Points. After the Mastermind is defeated, the player with the most Victory Points is the individual winner.
As far as Marvel board games go, Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game is an A+. The game mechanics, superhero theming, and extremely high replayability with all of the expansions make this a fan favorite in my gaming group.
