To Stream or Not To Stream?

The Best TV/Movie Streaming Services

Most people today watch TV and movies the easy way: streaming. With no commercials and the next episode on autoplay, a good internet connection guarantees a smooth viewing experience. From Netflix to Hulu and everything in between, you can probably find exactly what you’re looking for.

netflix rennerNetflix is probably by far the most used streaming service available. For just $7.99 a month, you have unlimited access to TV and movies they have provided. It’s a wide selection. Netflix has sitcoms like FRIENDS, The Office, Frasier, and That 70’s Show. It also has TV dramas like Blue Bloods, Grey’s Anatomy, Mad Men, and Breaking Bad. It even has a wide selection of anime like Fullmetal Alchemist (2003 and Brotherhood), Ouran High School Host Club, Naruto, and Attack on Titan. Movies also vary widely from relatively new movies like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to classics like Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Netflix even has its own original content shows like Stranger Things and Narcos. And, Netflix changes up what they have available every month, so you never run out of things to watch.

Hulu is very similar to Netflix in organization and price. Hulu tends to stream more TV shows, while Netflix has about the same amount of shows and movies. When something isn’t on Netflix, the next best place to check is Hulu. It does have a variety of shows to choose from, though, with a couple of price choices. For $5.99 a month, you still get the unlimited streaming but with a couple commercial breaks within the episode. Even so, one great thing about Hulu is they have deals with networks like NBC and ABC where episodes that air one day, are available on Hulu the next day. This works out for fans of shows like The Bachelor or This is Us who are eager each week to see what’s next. Another bonus is that the interface is not much different whether you’re streaming on your TV or your computer.

Amazon Prime is another great source for streaming. A Prime account is $40 a year and with it comes more than just free 2-day shipping on your packages. Amazon has its own TV shows like The Man in High Castle, a show depicting the world if Germany and Japan had won WWII. Or the recent Golden Globe winner, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. There are also plenty of popular TV shows available with a Prime membership right now like Band of Brothers, Sex and the City, Doctor Who, and Vikings. You can even stream Spongebob Squarepants right now. Movie-wise there are also plenty of great titles like Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Me Before You, Moonlight, and Reservoir Dogs. There is so much to choose from, and some titles you might have to pay for, but rentals through Amazon are as low as $2.99 even without a Prime membership.

Broadway HD

Broadway HD is a hidden gem that is every theater nerd’s dream. It’s only $8.99 a month and there is a ton of great theater to watch. Just the variety of musicals sold me on it since there are classics like Oklahoma! and Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn. There are recent Tony-nominees like Falsettos and She Loves Me. They have more obscure musicals like Daddy Long Legs and Indecent. The big three Andrew Lloyd Webber hits, Phantom of the Opera, Cats, and Jesus Christ Superstar are available. They even have a great production of Company starring Neil Patrick Harris! They have a whole section of Shakespeare featuring BBC shows and stage productions. Two Lord of the Rings alum are featured in this section, with Sir Ian McKellen in King Lear and Orlando Bloom in Romeo and Juliet. This is one special streaming service for a different consumer of entertainment.

What This Means

No matter what you’re looking for, there is a place to stream it. I think cable companies are on the way out as streaming services offer a wide selection with no interference. A lower cost is just another bonus.
