Toonami Returns to Adult Swim May 26, 2012

For most of North America, Toonami was the first introduction to quality anime. Anime existed in the United States before Toonami, but was mostly garbage, or blatant hatchet jobs of existing footage. Without Toonami existing, very few in North Americans would have heard of shows like Rurouni Kenshin, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, as well as the stuff from the less remembered afternoon show.

Originally created as a segment for Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Toonami quickly gained popularity and was given its own host T.O.M. and a new series. When it was on originally, it was one of the few places to see non Pokemon, non Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series. After introducing audiences to the wonders and the oddities that is Japanese Animation for 11 years, Toonami originally signed off in 2008.

The Toonami revival started as an April Fool’s prank that was not well received. A lot of the fooled were downright pissed off. In addition to showing classic clips and the best episodes, Adult Swim also created a new T.O.M. character model and hired his voice actor, Steve Blum to do new voice work. After admitting to the prank, Adult Swim encouraged the Toonami faithful to ask for it back.

So far, no official lineup has been announced. All that is known so far that is only going to be one day a week, that T.O.M is returning and Steve Blum is lending his voice once again. In addition to new never before seen series, it is assumed that perennial favorites like Cowboy BeBop, FLCL, and Fullmetal Alchemist will take part.
