On August 18, 2017, Marvel’s The Defenders on Netflix will be set loose upon us for our viewing pleasure (check out the trailer here). We finally get to see Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist team up to fight bad guys! After all the teasing and small connections throughout each hero’s series, we finally get to see them all come together in what we hope will be an incredible event. There are a ton of things to look forward to, but theses are the Top 10 Reasons to be excited about Marvel’s The Defenders.
1. Power Man and Iron Fist
As a long time fan of The Power Man and Iron Fist comic books, this is the thing that I am most excited about—seeing the best “bros” in comics finally meet on the screen. It has been teased in the trailer that they do not get off to the most friendly start but hopefully, that is cooled down fast and they become best buds for life! I am very interested in seeing what kind of chemistry actors Mike Colter and Finn Jones have on screen. Maybe they can spin this off into a Power Man and Iron Fist series!
2. Daughters of the Dragon
Like Luke Cage and Iron Fist, Colleen Wing and Misty Knight also have a respective comic book team up The Daughters of The Dragon. As both Misty Knight and Colleen Wing are set to appear in The Defenders series we should get a glimpse of their first meet up. Seeing the interaction between the hard-nosed detective and the martial arts master will be great to see. Hopefully, they will deliver a nice team up for fans of the duo!
3. Love triangles
Between everyone set to appear in The Defenders, there have been quite a few “hook ups” between the characters. Luke Cage has had a fling with Jessica Jones and Misty Knight, while Colleen Wing and Danny Rand got pretty close in Iron Fist, and we can’t forget Daredevil and Clair Temple had a short thing going. In the comic book world, Danny Rand and Misty Knight were a couple for quite a long time and Luke Cage is married to Jessica Jones with a child, while Daredevil is either with Karen Page or getting with whoever is around at the time. It will be interesting to see how the Netflix versions of these characters handle these relationships and if they will follow their comic book counterparts in the future. Having all these characters in one room may cause some drama.
4. 8 episodes
I think the general consensus is that for the Marvel Netflix shows 13 episodes may be too long, especially if it is telling one long narrative story. Luckily for The Defenders, we have a more condensed eight episode season schedules. This should allow for the story to flow better and not be bogged down. With only eight episodes there should be no wasted space and nothing should drag along.
5. The Punisher
It is not officially confirmed, but it has been teased that The Punisher will show up in The Defenders. John Bernthal’s performance as Frank Castle in Daredevil Season 2 earned The Punisher his own Netflix series and it is well-deserved. Bernthal was brilliant, and having The Punisher show up in The Defenders could be a lot of fun. I would love to see his interactions with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist and how these heroes react to him and his vigilante style. It would also serve very well to tease Season One of The Punisher, which is most likely premiering in November of this year.
6. Foggy Nelson
After Daredevil Season 2, Matt Murdock and best friend/business partner Foggy Nelson did not leave on the best of terms. Obviously somehow they are going to meet up again and it will be interesting to see what is going to happen between them. Will they patch things up or is Nelson and Murdock out of business for good?
7. Sigourney Weaver
It was a bit of a surprise when actress Sigourney Weaver was cast in The Defenders, and even a bigger shocker when it was revealed that she would be the “big bad” of the series. So far we know that she is playing a character named Alexandra— and that is about it. Lots of fan theories are pointing to who she may be actually portraying, but there is no official word yet. Having a high profile actress like Weaver playing a “mystery character” really builds up the anticipation of the show and what is going to happen!
Stick is an old jerk and he makes me laugh a lot— that’s it. I am mainly excited about seeing Stick and Jessica Jones interact, you know that is going to be some fun!
9. The Hand
So we have to be finally be figuring out what The Hand is up to, right? After being a major antagonist to Daredevil and Iron Fist, we should finally learn what these guys are up to. They have resurrected Elektra and have a big hole in the city— obviously, they are up to no good. Whatever it is, it’s most likely going to be the thing that brings our heroes together so I am very excited to see what their overall plan is.
10. Team Up
I am just excited to see these heroes all together on one screen, much like The Avengers is going to be a lot of fun seeing all of those Marvel characters together and interacting for the first time. The connectivity has been teased, names have been dropped and even some characters have shown up in other series ( Claire Temple has magically met everyone). Each hero is so different in attitude and the way they approach things, so it is going to be a lot of fun to see them all interact and have to work together.
Well, that is it the Top 10 Reasons to be Excited about Marvel’s The Defenders. From the first meetings of characters to the mystery of Sigourney Weaver and the Hand, there is a lot to look forward to. Do you agree? Disagree? What are you excited about? We only have a few short weeks until The Defenders premieres, let us know what you think in the comments.
