If you are a fan of Attack on Titan and not yet caught up forewarning. We are about to go into spoiler territory. This is your last chance… Still here? Okay, let’s jump in!
Attack on Marco
So if you’re like me, then you first watched season 1 of Attack on Titan on Netflix during 2017. Now I know I could get some hate for this, but I’ve only ever seen the dubbed version. Anyhow, when I first watched the series I was in awe of the story and the overall willingness to let characters die when it makes sense in the series. Even if it was a fan favorite.
If you remember back in season 1 we had to say goodbye to characters pretty soon with the attacks from the Titans. One of those characters was Marco. He had died protecting his city and nothing malicious had happened… Wait what? You mean there was something malicious? No. Seriously?
Well, it turns out Marco was murdered. He had discovered the secret that Reiner and Bertholdt were able to turn into Titans, like Erin, and were planning an attack of their own. Instead of performing a quick and painless death they left him without his gear to be eaten by Titans.
I know what you’re thinking, JERKS! This revelation was revealed in the episode titled “Descent“. The episode focused on Reiner and Bertholdt. It shows the two’s bond with a mix of flashbacks and present time showing how the two have grown together. Painting them as heroic figures within the world as you see their struggles and triumphs. Then you learn they murdered someone together.
You know what they say, the friends that murder together… no idea where I’m taking that joke. Just going to leave it there.
Now it’s been a while since I’ve seen the series, but this kind of undercuts some of the emotional weight I had during season 1. Not to like to compare it to another show that is messing with my feelings right now, but this seems like an episode from season 8 of Game of Thrones. If you’re watching you know what I mean. I don’t know how I personally about revelations of major deaths coming up seasons later to change their narrative, but hey that’s just how I’m feeling about it.
How do you feel about Marco’s death? Do you think it undercuts the story up until now? Did you see this coming? Do you think there will be some more altering revelations this season? Let me know down in the comments below.
