Trekkies everywhere can rejoice!
The new CBS Star Trek series is fleshing out it’s cast members as time goes on. First it was Michelle Yeoh getting cast in the lead role. Now, thanks to Variety we’ve got two more cast members for Star Trek: Discovery to add to the list. Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp are going to be the two newest members above the Starship USS Discovery.
Meet the New Star Trek Discovery Cast Members
The first addition is Anthony Rapp, known for his role as Mark Cohen in the Original Broadway Cast of Jonathan Larson’s RENT (a role he also portrayed in the film adaptation of said Broadway musical). Anthony Rapp will portray Lt. Stamets who is an astromycologist, a fungus expert, and a Starfleet science officer aboard the starship USS Discovery. Doug Jones is known for roles in such genre films as Hellboy, as Abe Sapien, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, as the Silver Surfer and perhaps most notably as the famous Faun that moves the story in Pan’s Labyrinth. Jones will be taking on the role of Lt. Saru who is a Starfleet science officer and a member of an alien species. That last part is particularly interesting as it is said it’s a completely new alien species.
Star Trek: Discovery is the first Star Trek series to be made since Enterprise went off the air after four years on UPN in 2005. It is also the first series to be made exclusively for the CBS All Access streaming service and it’s of course produced by CBS Productions. The show is going to be set 10 years before the original Star Trek series, which starred William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley. The show is apparently going to focus on an event or incident in Star Trek history that has been referenced but never actually explored. That should be very interesting to both new and old Star Trek fans.
The series is said to debut in May of next year.
