We’ve got some heartbreaking news for Game of Thrones fans today. Just as Watchers on the Wall reported earlier, Neil Fingleton has passed away at the age of 36. Game of Thrones fans near and far knew Neil Fingleton for his role as the giant “Mag the Mighty”. The reports say that the cause of death was heart failure. Fingleton was also known as the tallest man in the United Kingdom.
Loss of the Mighty
Neil Fingleton wasn’t just an actor, he was also an athlete, a basketball player, and a good one at that. Born in Durham, England, he traveled to the United States for his high school years to play basketball. He went on to play in college basketball with UNC Chapel Hill and Holy Cross. He graduated in 2004 with a degree in history. Neal retired from the sport in 2007, the same year he was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records when he was named the Tallest Man in Britain.
In Game of Thrones, he was Mag the Mighty, one of the last of the giants. He appeared in the season 4 episode “The Watchers on the Wall” which was the episode Mance Rayder and the Free Folk attack Castle Black. Mance tells Jon Snow that among the giants Mag as “was their king. Last of a bloodline that stretches back before the First Men.” For those who don’t remember Fingleton’s Mag appeared in the well-known scene where Mag attacks the Gate while Grenn leads the defense against him and ultimately all are killed in the battle.
Game of Thrones wasn’t the only acting job that Neil Fingleton was known for. He also participated in projects like X-Men: First Class, 47 Ronin, Jupiter Ascending and of course fans of Doctor Who will remember Fingleton as the Fisher King.
He was a wonderful man who will be remembered fondly and our prayers are with his family and friends.
