It’s the last day of SDCC 2015, and even though it was Sunday there were still a few panels left, among them Vampire Diaries. This is the seventh year that the show has appeared in the convention, but this time there was a very important face missing. Yep. Nina Dobrev. Nina Dobrev played Elena Gilbert and announced her departure from the show earlier this year.
This is the first year without Nina Dobrev and although her absence is definitely noted, when asked EP Julie Plec said, “Of course, it’s bittersweet. We miss Nina.”
Ian Somerhalder also had a comment on the show’s future without Dobrev, “It’s just an evolution of the story. Everything changes. Stories come. Stories go.”
The other star of the show, Paul Wesley, thought that this might bring a freshness to a show that has been on the air for 7 years now, “When a show has been on for seven years,” he said, “You need a shift in dynamic, and I think it created a new sort of world in a way. So I think it’s a fresh take on a show that’s been on for over half a decade.”
They mentioned that even though Dobrev is gone, Elena still lives on “You still feel the essence and the spirit of Elena,” said Candice Accola and Kat Graham remarked on what she thought of the direction the show went “I thought it was a really clever way to kind of keep Elena there and keep her presence there and keep the door open for a lot of ways to bring her back.”
Julie Plec also claimed she sees the show going past season 7 even without Dobrev.
I tried to remain mostly unbiased through this article but I always thought the way they treated Nina’s departure was a disservice to her character and her fans. Also I don’t think this show will live past season 7, and honestly it shouldn’t. Let’s give better shows chance to shine, because this one is well past it’s prime.
