Known predominantly for their roles in comedy and drama film, Dave and James Franco are now venturing into a co-production for television. The two brothers have aligned for a series said to follow the events of the book, Masters of DOOM.
To those unfamiliar, Masters of DOOM was a book originally published in 2003. The subtitle of the book, “How Two Guys Created an Empire and Transformed Pop Culture“, gives an indicator of what to expect.
Masters of DOOM tells the story of the video game developer, id Software. They are the company that created the massively successful DOOM franchise. A video game that revolutionized first-person shooters as a genre.
Adapt or Die!
The initial pilot ordered by the USA network will begin with the early days of development with DOOM.
Serving as executive producers, James and Dave Franco have an invested interest with this adaptation and how it will be recieved by the public. Masters of DOOM author, David Kushner, is not involved in the project. However, Another author will be taking the reigns.
Tom Bissell, co-writer of the book “The Disaster Artist”, will be writing and executive producing the Masters of DOOM series.
James Franco starred in the leading role of The Disaster Artist movie adaptation. The previous ties between Franco and Bissell will make their working relationship with this project an easier fit.
The Leading Stars
There has been no news yet on whether the Franco brothers will be starring in the series.
We do know that it will have a heavy focus on the company founders, John D. Carmack and John Romero. The candidates for these interesting personalities will be interesting, to say the least.
A successful series out of video-game roots could lead to a potential for the gaming industry to develop into a whole new area. A positive transition from console to tv series can only bring further fortunes for both mediums. We hope the best with this bright new endeavor for the Francos and id Software.
