Review – The Walking Dead S07E14: The Other Side

The Walking Dead S07E14: “The Other Side”

Last week on The Walking Dead, we left off with Rosita coming to the Hilltop to ask for Sasha’s help on an important mission. While some felt that this was an episode of filler content, several of the core characters were featured, important conversations were finally had, and the ground was laid for an exciting final two episodes of the season.

The Good

Finally, after 14 episodes in, Maggie and Daryl finally have a real conversation about Glenn. Daryl obviously feels guilty about his death and apologizes to Maggie. Maggie assures him that it is not his fault, and he needs to refocus these feelings to the real cause at hand – taking down the man who was actually responsible… Negan.

There was also a significant conversation between Maggie and Jesus. As Maggie begins to slowly take over the Hilltop, her bond with Jesus is growing stronger. This leads him to reveal his sexuality to her, referring to his “boyfriends”. Readers of the graphic novels are already familiar with this revelation. Regardless, fans are excited for the continued representation for the LGBTQ community on The Walking Dead, with Jesus being the sixth LGBT character on the series following Tara, Alisha, Aaron, Eric, and Denise.

The Bad

Rosita and Sasha’s mission had been heavily discussed as a potential suicide mission for one or both of them. After the initial plan of taking down Negan with a long-range rifle shot fails, they decide that they need to enter the compound. At the fence, Sasha asks Rosita to cover her, when she is actually locking herself in and Rosita out, telling her, “it’s not your time – they need you.” As Sasha runs into the compound, a series of gunshots are fired, and we are left questioning what will happen to our hero.

With one actress very pregnant (Christian Serratos, who plays Rosita), and the other one recently landing the starring role on the new Star Trek Discovery, (Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Sasha), the fate of either of these characters is up in the air. Fans would hate to lose either of them, but it’s not looking good at this point.

The Ugly

When Rosita and Sasha get to the Sanctuary, they discover that Eugene is there, but that capacity of his role there is surprising. They rush in to rescue him, but he begins to cry and refuses to go with him, telling them, “I didn’t ask you to come so go.” It also begs the question – what does Eugene do when he runs back into the Sanctuary? Does he run and tell the other Saviors, or even Negan, a warning of what is to come?

Where do Eugene’s loyalties lie? Is he reverting to his cowardly ways, ebbing and flowing with the ways that will keep him protected, no matter what? Or does he have a greater plan that will benefit our heroes in the pinnacle battle with Negan?

With only two episodes left to go in season 7 of The Walking Dead, the chances of another cliffhanger ending are definitely building. Next week, we see Tara and the team heading to Oceanside to claim their arsenal of guns. The synopsis of the episode, “Something They Need”, reads “A group of Alexandrians embarks on a journey; one member of the group must make a heartbreaking decision.” While I hope this isn’t the case, I feel that this episode will back us up a little bit in time, showing us what is happening with Rick and the other Alexandrians which are occurring at the same time as the events of Rosita and Sasha. So we likely will not have an answer to the burning questions: “What happens to Sasha?” and “Who is that mysterious figure with the crossbow?”
