TV Show Bloodbath 2018: Has Your Fave Show Been Canceled?

Has Your Favorite Show Been Canceled?

It’s the middle of May, and those of us who watch TV know what that means. Shows are deciding what their upcoming lineups are going to look like.  Unfortunately, this means a lot of shows get sacrificed to make way for new programming. Let’s look at the current scripted fiction show scorecard in alphabetical order by the network.

ABC Logo

Canceled on ABC:

Alex, Inc.

The Crossing

Designated Survivor

Kevin (Probably) Saves The World

The Mayor

Somewhere Between

Ten Days In the Valley

Ending this season on ABC:

The Middle

Once Upon a Time

Renewed on ABC:

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (renewed for a reduced season)

American Housewife

For the People

Fresh Off the Boat

The Goldbergs

The Good Doctor

Grey’s Anatomy

How to Get Away With Murder

Modern Family

Splitting Up Together

Station 19

There aren’t too many surprises on the ABC list. The biggest surprise is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s shorter season order. However, ABC has not definitively announced that will be Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ s final season. I would recommend that fans keep an eye out for an announcement of that nature.

Canceled on CBS:

Kevin Can Wait

Living Biblically

Me, Myself and I

Superior Donuts

Wisdom of the Crowd

Renewed at CBS:

The Big Bang Theory

Blue Bloods

Criminal Minds

Hawaii Five-0

Life In Pieces

Madam Secretary

Man With a Plan

NCIS: Los Angeles

NCIS: New Orleans

Young Sheldon

Official Word Pending for CBS:

Code Black

There aren’t many surprises in CBS’ renewals and cancellations either. However, there are a couple highlights. Elementary and Code Black only started their most recent seasons a couple of weeks ago. The former has been picked up for its next season, while the latter waits in the wings.  Amusingly, Kevin Can Wait killed off its first season female lead for ratings. Unfortunately for them, that gambit clearly failed.

Ending on the CW:

The Originals

Canceled on the CW:

Life Sentence

Renewed on the CW:

The 100

Black Lightning

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (renewed for a final season)

The Flash

Jane the Virgin

Legends of Tomorrow

The CW has a well-earned reputation regarding not killing shows. However, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has been renewed for its last season, which is almost like a cancellation. Additionally, the CW didn’t pick up Wayward Sisters (a spinoff to their long-runner Supernatural). Does this mean bad news for Supernatural‘s future?
Fox Logo

Canceled on Fox:

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (saved by NBC for a smaller season)

The Exorcist

Last Man On Earth

The Mick

Ending this season on Fox:

New Girl

Renewed on Fox:

Bob’s Burgers

Family Guy

Gotham (renewed for a final season)

Lethal Weapon (renewed after they replaced lead actor)

The Orville

The Resident

Official Word Pending on Fox:

Ghosted (decision will be made after summer broadcast)

L.A. to Vegas

Fox’s collection of shows is the most interesting of the five. The network canceled Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which has since been saved. They also canceled Lucifer whose fandom wants to replicate Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s success. Finally, Lethal Weapon fired one of its leads the other day due to creating a hostile environment. Rumors indicated that if Fox couldn’t hire someone to replace him, Gotham wouldn’t be canceled and Lethal Weapon would. However, Lethal Weapon did manage to hire new lead Seann William Scott AND Gotham got renewed for one last season. Positive news all around!
Fox also picked up Last Man Standing which was controversially canceled by ABC last year. One of the possible reasons for that was that ABC didn’t own Last Man Standing, 20th Century Fox did. In turn, NBC Universal owns Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which they just saved. This upcoming season may be one where networks decide not to share profits. According to that reasoning, Lucifer‘s best chance is the CW.

Canceled on NBC:

The Brave

Great News

The Night Shift

Shades of Blue

Renewed on NBC:

A.P. Bio

The Blacklist

Chicago Fire

Chicago Med

Chicago P.D.

The Good Place

Good Girls

Law & Order: SVU

Midnight, Texas

This Is Us

Will and Grace

Official Word Pending on NBC:

Champions (decision will be made after season ends)

Marlon (has not yet aired its second season, will likely get a delayed announcement)

Reverie  (has not yet started airing, will likely get a delayed announcement)

Trial and Error (has not yet aired its second season, will likely get a delayed announcement)

Unfortunately, time-travel favorite Timeless is on the bubble yet again. It aired its two-part season finale on 13 May 2018. That may mean that an announcement is due any minute, or that NBC will group that announcement with their summer show announcements. Only time will tell.

Well, has your favorite show been canceled? Commiserate with your fellow fans in the comments.
