Twitch Prime to Drop Ad-Free Viewing

Twitch plans to drop one of its biggest perks for Amazon Prime members: universal ad-free viewing. Starting September 14, ad-free streams will no longer be an option on Twitch Prime. Amazon acquired Twitch in 2014, and in 2016 launched Twitch Prime. According to Variety‘s Todd Spangler, Twitch Prime “was designed to drive more subscribers to Amazon’s Prime program.” The benefits of Twitch Prime included ad-free viewing, free and one-day shipping on games, etc., and access to Prime Video.

Alas, no more ad-free viewing!

Twitch has close to 10 million active users, 20 million of which stream their gameplay. 15,000 of those users have monetized their streams in partnership with Twitch. Along with ad-free streaming, Twitch Prime introduced video uploads, where users could “publish key moments of their game videos, or even other game-related content with higher production value.” The service also included free games and in-game loot.

The Details on the Twitch Prime Changes

In a recent blog post, Twitch stated,

“Advertising is an important source of support for the creators who make Twitch possible. This change will strengthen and expand that advertising opportunity for creators so they can get more support from their viewers for doing what they love.”

As a replacement for ad-free viewing, Twitch offers one free subscription to a channel. This subscription allows ad-free viewing on that one channel, depending on if the creator has the feature enabled. Viewers can also get ad-free viewing for all channels with a Twitch Turbo subscription for $8.99 per month. Basically, the same set up as Twitch Prime. Except now, instead of only paying $99 for Prime to get no ads, you have to pay $99 for Prime and $8.99 for Twitch Turbo to get no ads. Dare I say, capitalism at work?

Todd Spangler has the details; he writes in an article for Variety,

“Twitch Prime members with monthly subscriptions will continue to get ad-free viewing until Oct. 15; those who already have an annual subscription (or those who upgrade to an annual subscription before Sept. 14) will continue with ad-free viewing until their next renewal date.”

All other Twitch Prime benefits will stay the same.
