Two New Live-Action Marvel Shows Coming to Hulu

Gabriel Luna - Ghost Rider - Agents of SHIELD (Marvel)

Ghost Rider and Helstrom Coming to Hulu

Just announced: Hulu will be the home for two new live-action Marvel television show in 2020. Ghost Rider and Helstrom (based on Daimon and Ana Hellstrom) will both be coming to the streaming service. It was recently announced that Hulu would be the home for several animated Marvel shows, but now Hulu is bolstering its Marvel roster of live-action shows. With Runaways season 3 on its way, Hulu will have three live-action Marvel television shows.

The Ghost Rider show will follow the newest incarnation of the Spirit of Vengeance, Robbie Reyes. This incarnation most recently appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in season 4. Rather strangely, it is noted that the Hulu version will not follow up with the character from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but will be a new start for the character. What is more to note is that actor Gabriel Luna will be reprising the role of the Hell Charger-driving Spirit of Vengeance.

That is exciting and a little weird at the same time. Exciting because I like Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes and thought he did a great job. A little weird that they are just rebooting the character with the same actor. But at least we get a fresh start with the character, and Luna gets to stay.

Helstrom

Not much yet is known about the Helstrom series (also note that it is spelled “Hellstrom” in the comic books, no word on why they changed the spelling). Comicbook.com has a quick synopsis of the characters and show. “…based on the characters Daimon and Ana Helstrom from the comics. The brother and sister duo have a “complicated dynamic” and they are the children of a serial killer. The series follows the two of them as they track down people terrorizing humanity.” Most recently the characters popped up in the Marvel comics mini-series Spirits of Vengeance

So, it looks like Hulu is going to be the place where Marvel drops its more adult-oriented shows. Now that Disney owns a majority stake in the streaming service (and possibly even more) it looks like a good pairing. No word yet of if these live-action shows will be a part of the MCU as a whole or a separate continuity.

Probably the most exciting idea based on these two new show announcements is what it could mean for other “darker” Marvel characters. With odd characters like the Hellstroms getting a series, could we see other characters come to life as well? I and many others would love a Moon Knight show! Heck, this could lead to a Midnight Sons television show with Ghost Rider, Blade, Moon Knight, and the Helstroms! That would be epic! Or even give us some horror specials featuring Werewolf by Night, Manphibian and others, which then could lead to a Legion of Monsters show starring Elsa Bloodstone!
