A new villain walks among the dead in AMC’s The Walking Dead. Comic Vine has just reported that Jeffrey Dean Morgan ( Supernatural, Grey’s Anatomy, The Losers) has just been cast as the infamous Negan. Be warned, if you haven’t read The Walking Dead comics, spoiler ahead. Negan is a major villain in The Walking Dead comic series, who is said to be worse than even the Governor. The character will debut during the season 6 finale as a guest star and will presumably be upped to series regular for season 7 of the AMC hit show.
But who is Negan exactly? The Walking Dead wikia describes him as “a main character first introduced in Issue 100 of Image Comics’ The Walking Dead and is the former leader of the Saviors and is a primary antagonist in the comic series. He uses his authority and resources to subjugate other communities, such as the Hilltop Colony, The Kingdom, and later the Alexandria Safe-Zone, into paying tribute to The Saviors, in exchange for protection against zombies.”
The way he appeared in the comic was memorable to say the least. In the comics he beats Glenn to death with his baseball bat. His baseball bat, named Lucille, is covered in barbed wire and Negan always carries it with him. When asked about the appearance of Negan, The Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple said:
“There’s a particular story in that arc that I’m very excited for. But because we know where we’re going, we have some opportunities to play around with it and put some things in that will lead up to [Negan and Alexandria] in different ways yet fulfill the story Robert told to the Nth degree by utilizing some slightly different approaches. Lineups and timelines and the whole nine yards.”
At the moment we have no clue if the show will go the way of the comics or if it will introduce the character in another way. Either way hardcore fans of the comics are glad to see him join the show.
