The news was confirmed by his agent Dominic Mancini that the actor suffered complications from leukaemia.
Shortly before this, Wilson confirmed that he was taking part in the next season of The Walking Dead at a New York Comic Con panel.
A strong career and a gentleman
The actor had been active on the con circuit around the country throughout the year and years previous. I had the pleasure of meeting him when he came to Dublin and he was an absolute gentleman and very much embodied a calm nature that you couldn’t help but admire. This is a feeling that resonated with online tributes.
In addition to his role as Hershel in the AMC show, Wilson had a strong career for years. Wilson is well recognised for his roles in, In Cold Blood and In the Heat of the Night in 1967. He has also appeared in some legendary movies such as the Great Gatsby and Dead Man Walking.
He earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the 1980 film, The Ninth Configuration.
In more recent years, Wilson starred in Pearl Harbor and in CSI but it’s his role in The Walking Dead that many will know him for and his exit from the show was one of the most heartbreaking ones to date for me.
Wilson is survived by his wife, Heavenly, whom he married in 1977.
We at Word of the Nerd would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and fans.
