One of the few highlights from Star Trek Into Darkness was the introduction and then sadly the destruction of possibly the largest Federation starship ever seen on-screen, the U.S.S. Vengeance. Secretly built at a base near Jupiter by the head of Starfleet Command, Admiral Marcus, the Vengeance was intended for starting a war with the Klingon Empire. The Vengeance was built using state of the art technology and was designed to operate with a minimal crew in spite of its massive size and complexity. With a new and advanced warp drive and a staggering array of weapons, the Vengeance proved to be more than a match for the Federation’s newest and seemly most advanced flagship, the Enterprise. Marcus built the Vengeance as a deterrent to any known or unknown aggressors to the Federation, thereby abandoning every principle Starfleet was based on. It took Marcus’ death at the hands of Khan Noonien Singh to make him and his allies with Section 31 realize just how wrong their plans had been. Once Khan had commandeered the Vengeance and set his sights on Starfleet Headquarters, the badly damaged Enterprise and the quick thinking of her crew prevented the deaths of thousands of lives. Khan was captured and put into cryo-status along with over 70 of his followers. The Enterprise was severely damaged in its engagement with the Vengeance and required extensive repairs and refit in order to put her back into service. The Enterprise was then chosen to embark on a historic and unprecedented five-year exploration mission.
