“We must not remind them that giants walk the Earth.” Those words were spoken by Superman in the 1986 graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns. Superman was inferring to Batman that we was causing a little too much trouble since he decided to come out of retirement. This would ultimately lead to the Man of Steel and The Dark Knight battling it out for the last time. The final scene of Batman holding a beaten and broken Superman by the throat has become one of the most famous in comic book history. The Dark Knight Returns, written by Frank Miller has become a cornerstone in comic book mythology and some would argue that it surpasses Watchmen as one of the best pieces of comic book literature ever written. It certain ranks high on every comic book fan’s list of “must reads”. The story was also adapted into one of DC Comics’ famous animated features where the epic story of Batman’s return to crime fighting was brought to life in two stunning full length films. Although the films do a magnificent job at capturing the essence of Frank Miller’s original work, they lack the grittiness and the overall darkness of the comic. Miller’s work was a product of the times and a social commentary of the late 1980s. It captured the dark moments of a decade known mainly for its decadence, something that the animated adaptation sadly lacks.
Today’s wallpaper is a scene from The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 featuring Batman and Superman moments before their climatic final battle. Best friends who were once trusted allies forced to battle to the death to uphold their own differing ideals. The Man of Steel and his calm confidence and arrogance in his superior abilities. The Batman, master tactician, cold and calculating having prior planned every conceivable detail of the epic confrontation right down to its outcome.
