Warner Bros Releases First Look of Timothée Chalamet in Dune

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Reveals First Look at Its Paul Atreides

The newest science-fiction hero is upon us. He looks almost ready to take on the challenges ahead. On Monday morning, Vanity Fair shared the first picture of Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in Dune. It shows Paul on his home planet, Caladan, as transport ships arrive to take him and his family to their new home, Arrakis—also known as Dune.

What Is Dune About?

Villeneuve’s film is based on the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert. This movie will apparently cover about half the book. The plot begins when Paul’s father, Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) is charged with taking over the mining trade of Dune, replacing the greedy Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard). Duke Leto brings Paul’s mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) and Paul along for the journey. However, a betrayal uproots Paul and Jessica and lands them with the Fremen, the native people of Dune who live deep in the desert. There, Paul meets the leader of the Fremen, Stilgar (Javier Bardem) and the warrior Chani (Zendaya).

Chalamet sees Paul’s story as a non-traditional hero’s journey. “The immediately appealing thing about Paul was the fact that in a story of such detail and scale and world-building, the protagonist is on an anti-hero’s journey of sorts,” he said.

The Star-Studded Cast of Dune

The star of Dune, Chalamet, has made a name for himself over the years. From Call Me by Your Name to Little Women, he has stood out as an actor. Oscar Isaac has covered several genres himself, including sci-fi when he was in the recent Star Wars films. Then there’s Stellan Skarsgard, who is a legend of film. But the film will also star Josh Brolin as Paul’s mentor and weapons master to the family, Dave Bautista as a brutish nephew of the Baron, and Jason Momoa as a swordsman of Duke Leto’s family.

Will Dune Still Premiere This Year?

Fortunately, Dune is still set to open December 18, 2020. Unlike most films rescheduling due to coronavirus concerns, Warner Bros has not pushed back the date. So far. As more information comes in about the virus, I’m sure we’ll hear more from the company.
