Press Release

There May Actually Be a TV Show Called “Sex Criminals”

Oh wow. I am so, so happy.

4415279-15105673-mmmainWednesday was a hell of a day for both television and comic book fans alike. As reported by Deadline, the comic super-couple of Matt Fraction (Sex Criminals, Hawkeye) and Kelly Sue DeConnick (Pretty Deadly, Bitch Planet) have entered into a two-year television agreement with Universal Television. As per the deal, Fraction and DeConnick, working out of their production company Milkfed Criminal Masterminds, would help adapt their award-winning comics to the small screen. In addition to their creator-owned properties, Fraction and DeConnick would help create original television stories for Universal.

Universal Television executive Bela Bajaria had this to say on the deal, “We’re always excited to usher in fresh voices to the television space, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with Matt and Kelly Sue, a fantastic pair whose award-winning comics are as deeply realized as they are entertaining.”

She’s not wrong. Between the two of them, this disgustingly talented couple has amassed a string of fantastic creator-owned comics. From Cassanova and ODY-C, to Bitch Planet and Pretty Deadly, the married writers have a bevy of award-winning comics ripe for adaptation. That’s a rundown of top-notch titles! Okay, I’m actually a bit “eh” on Cassanova, but the rest? Fantastic.

Slated for first? The Harvey and Eisner winning masterpiece Sex Criminals. Co-created with artist Chip Zdarsky, Sex Criminals tells the story of Suzie and Jon, two twenty-somethings who discover that they can stop time after having an orgasm. Known affectionately as “The Quiet” by Suzie, and “Cumworld” by Jon, this frozen time-space is used by the couple to do what any of us would — steal huge amounts of money. Unfortunately, as Suzie and Jon go about robbing banks, they quickly draw the attention of some very dangerous people. It should be quite the show.

And I know that if this show is made at all, it’s most likely a very long way away. But honestly, I can’t stop giggling at the prospect of watching a commercial for a show called “Sex Criminals.”
