Who Should Play Batgirl in the DCEU?
Who should play Batgirl in the DCEU? According to a recent interview with Brazil’s Omelete, it’s Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan. When asked if there were any other superheroes out there that she’d want to portray (other than Nebula) Gillan had this to say:
“Batgirl would be pretty cool! My favorite films in that world are dark and my favorite one is Dark Knight. I just love the way that was directed so much so I would love to work in that kind of world as the director.”
Since the interview broke, the internet has been positively abuzz. So much so that it got me thinking—who should play Batgirl? While I certainly don’t deny Karen Gillan is well suited for the role, is she the best woman for it? Below are my selections for who I feel would be best suited for the role of Batgirl. Each of these young, exceptionally talented women are leaders in their profession. I believe strongly that any of them would be exemplary choices for the daunting and exciting task of bringing Batgirl to life on the silver screen.
10. Ashley Greene
Ashley Greene is most well-known for playing Alice Cullen in the Twilight Saga. For anyone not familiar with the films (or the books) Alice has the largest character range or depth of any among the Cullen Clan. What Greene brings to the role of Batgirl are balance and confidence. Her reserved mannerisms, quirky oddball antics, and quiet ferocity would play perfectly to the strengths of Barbara Gordon. She even has some experience with the role already, as fans of the Batman: Arkham Knight video game will, no doubt, remember. Greene lent her voice to Batgirl/Oracle/Barbara Gordon back in 2015.
9. Anna Kendrick
Yet another Twilight alumna, Anna Kendrick is someone who should be given serious consideration for the role of Batgirl. This casting would, admittedly, depend on the direction the film sought to take and whether or not it wanted to participate in the DCEU. If the studio is looking for someone to play alongside Robert Pattinson, Kendrick, sadly, is not the one. But for a more comedic, slightly campy film version of Batgirl, it’s hard to envision a better choice. Her shy, often self-deprecating humor would play perfectly to a young Barbara Gordon/Batgirl going through the motions. A superb choice for a hero not yet defined, seeking to establish herself as a crime fighter in Gotham.
8. Ariel Winter
I know what you’re thinking: “Are you kidding me? The girl from Modern Family? She could NEVER be Batgirl!” Yeah, yeah; and Michael Keaton could never be Batman. Heath Ledger was the worst casting imaginable for the Joker—you get my point. While it’s true that “Alex Dunphy” might not seem like a logical choice, Ariel Winter has shown herself to be a formidable young actress. Her analytical mind, logical thought-processing capabilities, and an errant “coolness” to her demeanor are the exact traits that would make for a memorable Batgirl. Perhaps, one day—even an Oracle.
7. Chloe Grace Moretz
Admitting my own personal bias, I think Chloe Grace Moretz would be a perfect fit for the role of Batgirl. Mainly because I think that she can do absolutely anything. The renowned Princess of the Horror genre has been appearing in films from the time she was a little girl. Throughout her career, Chloe has always proven that she’s a force to be reckoned with. Her consistently powerful performances lend themselves to a more in-depth, character-driven Barbara Gordon. One unafraid to confront her damaged psyche. The dramatic range that she so effortlessly displays on-screen would coincide with Batgirl perfectly, whether she happened to be in a standalone film or as a part of a greater extended universe.
6. Sophie Turner
Sophie Turner seems like an obvious choice. From a purely aesthetic standpoint, she’s perfect for the character; embodying the physical features of Barbara Gordon right down to a tee. Sophie’s unforgettable role as Sansa Stark on HBO’s Game of Thrones only further compounds the argument as to why she not only could but should be Batgirl. As far as talent is concerned, hers is undeniable, firmly placing Sophie Turner in a league all of her own. She would command the role of Barbara Gordon, much like Sansa Stark commanded the North.
5. Emma Stone
If you close your eyes and think of Batgirl, inevitably, Emma Stone will soon come to mind. She’s intelligent, unfearing, bold and blunt. Her awkward sensibilities and unwavering loyalty both to herself and to her ideals would provide the perfect foundation for Barbara Gordon. I see Emma Stone’s Batgirl as kind of a black-mirror reflection of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. A firm and foul-mouthed Barbara Gordon, unafraid to tell off villains or even Batman himself. For a Batgirl with balls, Emma Stone would be the way to go.
4. Nathalie Emmanuel
Throw out the baby with the bathwater, because Gotham City needs Nathalie Emmanuel to play Batgirl. She is neither a safe nor a conventional choice, but one that warrants serious thought and consideration. With Emmanuel in the driver’s seat, all past preconceptions of Batgirl would be shattered in an instant. It would be a way to start from the ground up; a fresh start without fear of reprisal from comic book purists. Furthermore, Nathalie Emmanuel’s stoic nature would help to accentuate the inner conflict of Barbara Gordon/Batgirl navigating the often-murky waters of fighting crime in Gotham City.
3. Cara Delevingne
Everything about Cara Delevingne to me screams Batgirl. She has the look, the brood, as well as an incredibly dry and witty sense of self that would help to provide some levity to the character. More than anything, I see Cara as an already-established Batgirl. A heroine teetering on the edge of heroism and villainy. If Delevingne were able to harness the anger necessary to push Batgirl to the brink, to truly lose herself in the role, she could become iconic. Better than Hugh Jackman as Wolverine or Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. She just simply needs the chance to prove it.
2. Rose Leslie
If you don’t agree that Rose Leslie would be the perfect casting for Batgirl, then you truly know nothing. Just one look at the former Wildling will tell you all that you need to know: Rose Leslie is Batgirl. An absolutely fearless actress who imbues each and every role with that quintessential warrior spirit. Her tenacity is unmatched, and yet, she’s also not afraid to show her vulnerable side. A perfect balance of all the skills and traits that Batgirl possesses, Leslie could give Barbara the stripped-down, honest portrayal that she so desperately deserves.
1. Saoirse Ronan
My top choice for who should star as Batgirl is the incredibly talented Saoirse Ronan. At only 25 years of age, Ronan has just received her fourth Academy Award nomination. Out of all the immensely talented young actresses on this list, none can compete when it comes to understanding the depths of true and total character immersion. I can’t even begin to imagine what someone with the scope of her acting abilities could do with the character of Barbara Gordon. A Saoirse Ronan Batgirl wouldn’t need anyone—certainly not a Batman. Watching her don the cape and cowl could potentially be the greatest thing to ever happen to superhero films. She is the Batgirl we both need and deserve!
