WhoDatCosplay - Harley Quinn

Word of the Nerd is pleased to present to you one of our most popular features, Cosplayer Spotlight.  We feature new and talented cosplayers from the cosplay community.  Be sure to check back every Tuesday and Thursday to catch some up and coming new cosplay talent or get a look at some well established and famous members of the cosplay universe.

About WhoDatCosplay

My name is WhoDatCosplay! I am a 27-year-old mother who loves to cosplay DC Universe cosplays. I am a nursing student who has one more semester left, then I will be a registered nurse. My location is AL, but I travel up and down FL and LA.

How did you first get into cosplay?

Back in 2016!

Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?

I cosplay for fun, and to build my modeling portfolio!

Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them, or a hybrid?

I make and buy cosplays. I try to improve the ones bought to be more realistic.

How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?

Some take 10 minutes, others can take up to a month! Depends on the details and character I’m pulling off.

What is your favorite cosplay you have done so far?

Oh, this is a hard one. So far my favorite one is my Catwoman from Batman Returns.

What has been your most memorable experience as a cosplayer?

The most memorable experience I’ve had is getting to shake hands and meet Stan Lee. Even though it was a DC cosplay, he still loved it!

How do you feel about group cosplays?

I’ve not done many group cosplay shoots, which none has been by choice. It’s really hard to find cosplayers interested in group shoots around my area, unfortunately.

What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?

This year I am working on Squad Harley, Cheetah, Wonder Woman, and Starfire.

What issues do you see as being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?

I believe the biggest issue is people not being able to have fun, and see themselves in competition and not at a con.

What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?

The DC Universe is my specialty, but I like to do Elven cosplays as well.

What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photoshoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?

Waiting on the Amazon truck for my supplies LOL!

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

Amazon, Hobby Lobby, and Micheals. You can just not go wrong with Micheals.

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?

Being stared at in a sexual way. But I do have a voice for that reason alone.

Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?

I have learned that con crunching, is not good for your health, and you should never do that!

What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?

Do NOT slut-shame or body shame, anyone. Do NOT say only certain races should cosplay certain characters only, and do NOT disability sham! It’s disgusting!

How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?

Absolutely. It has become more of a competition than an outgoing event.

If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?

Do you set a budget for each cosplay?

My cosplays can get pretty pricey. I just try to do things bit by bit.

What does cosplay mean to you?

A fun escape from reality.

How do you see the cosplay community 10 years from now?

I sure hope I do, I’d only be 36!

What is your favorite con to attend?

Megacon, Orlando! It was a blast!

Is there another cosplayer who inspires you or is your role model?

There is a couple of course! CinderellaCosplay, CassandraCosplays, and Revved_Harley.

Do you consider yourself an inspiration to other cosplayers?

I don’t like to put myself on a high pedestal, but I do hope I inspire some to do what they want, and be whoever they want.

What advice would you give someone about meeting cosplayers and taking their pictures? How do you like to be approached?

Always ask for permission. It’s really rude to just walk up to someone with a camera in their face.

What is one thing you wish your fans knew about you?

That I am a lot more friendly than I look. I can’t control my face sometimes lol!

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

As if!
