Wil Wheaton Sues Geek & Sundry for Profits From Web Series
Wil Wheaton is the star of hit shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Big Bang Theory. He also created, wrote, and executive-produced a web series for Legendary Geek & Sundry called Titansgrave: The Ashes of Valkana. On Monday, the actor and his loan-out company Media Dynamics filed a lawsuit with the Los Angeles County Superior Court, claiming he had not received his share of revenue.
According to the contract from 2015, Wil Wheaton was to—as stated above—create, write, and executive-produce Titansgrave: The Ashes of Valkana. Legendary Geek & Sundry would pay him $50,000 plus fifty percent of the net profit from the series.
Legendary Geek & Sundry had exclusive rights to distribute the show. It had promotion rights as well. But according to the lawsuit, the company was supposed to “consult meaningfully” with Wheaton before executing those rights. The actor claims that the company breached this part of the contract and began negotiations for license agreements with Sinclair Broadcasting, Hulu, and Pluto TV without telling him anything about it.
What Wil Wheaton Expects
Wheaton believes Legendary Geek & Sundry received a large amount in fees because of those deals with broadcasting companies, and that he is due his share of that income. The company refuses to let him audit its books.
The actor is asking for $100,000 in damages. He also hopes that the court will order a full accounting conducted to calculate his share.
There is no word yet on how this affects the web series or any of Wheaton’s other work. I hope this goes his way. So many companies screw over content creators like this. Good luck, Wil Wheaton!
