Wonder Girl Launching Into Pre-production
Wonder Girl is coming to your television sets! The sidekick to Wonder Woman will be in a new TV series being showrun by Dailyn Rodriguez. This young Amazon, however, will not be fan-favorite Donna Troy, who has appeared on Titans. Nor will it be Cassie Sandsmark, who has appeared on Young Justice. This will be a new Latina sidekick, inspired by the upcoming “Future State” event this winter from DC Comics. The series will premiere on The CW. However, no premiere date, or production date, has been announced.
“Wonder Girl centers on Yara Flor, a Latina Dreamer who was born of an Amazonian Warrior and a Brazilian River God, learns that she is Wonder Girl. With her newfound power must fight the evil forces that would seek to destroy the world.
“This will be the first DC Comics production with a Latina lead. It will also possibly be the first major comic book show with a Latina lead. The new character was created by writer/artist Joelle Jones. Yara Flor will first appear in Future State: Wonder Woman in January.” [sic]
Rodriguez Leads the Way
Dailyn Rodriguez, the daughter of Cuban immigrants, got her start on USA’s Queen of the South. Rodriguez co-ran that show for the past two seasons, and has recently extended her contract. She took over showrunning with Season 4. Rodriguez will be working with Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions for this new series. Berlanti is currently in charge of most, if not all, DC programming on The CW. One series, Supergirl, will be ending with its sixth season later this year.
Wonder Comes to TV
The first Wonder Girl, Donna Troy, has appeared on television before, starting with the 1970s Wonder Woman show. She also appeared, in animation, with her fellow Teen Titans in animation at the time. Currently, Conor Leslie portrays her in live-action on Titans. Cassie Sandsmark, the second Wonder Girl, appeared in the Young Justice cartoon starting in the second season.
Word of the Nerd will continue to keep an eye on this story.
