Zack Snyder Leaves Justice League
Snyder Steps Down Due To Daughter’s Suicide
On Monday, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Zack Snyder will step down from post production on Justice League. This is due to a personal tragedy. In March, his 20-year-old daughter Autumn committed suicide. At the time, Autumn, Snyder’s daughter from his first marriage, was a student at Sarah Lawrence College and wanted to be a writer. This was kept private as Snyder worked on Justice League.
But, as he stated “In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was way through it. The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all consuming. And in the last two months, I’ve come to the realization …I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.”
His wife, Deborah Snyder, will also be taking a break as well from producing. Warner Brothers has backed the sabbatical, with WB President Toby Emmerich saying “What they are going through is unimaginable, and my heart — our hearts — go out to them.”
Given Snyder’s controversial presence, he’s well prepared to deal with trolls who might gloat about his personal tragedy. “Here’s the thing, I never planned to make this public,” he said. “I thought it would just be in the family, a private matter, our private sorrow that we would deal with. When it became obvious that I need to take a break, I knew there would be narratives created on the internet. They’ll do what they do. The truth it…I’m past caring about that kind of thing now.”
Whedon To Take Over Production
Snyder was heavily into post-production on Justice League when he decided to take this break to grieve. However, he has created a plan for the rest of post production. He is also handing it over to a fan favorite director. Joss Whedon will be taking over the rest of the production, handling pickups, extra scenes, and various other tasks. Whedon is no stranger to ensemble superhero films, having directed two Avengers films for Marvel. He has also been tapped to direct a solo Batgirl film by DC Comics/Warner Brothers.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that at the time of her death, Autumn had given her father and stepmother a manuscript of a science fiction novel. The Snyder family plan to publish it and donate the proceeds to charity.
Word of the Nerd would like to offer their condolences to the Snyder family.
