The Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 3 lineup is in full production swing, and the latest news from the studio is all the rage. Zendaya Coleman, who was added to the cast of Spiderman: Homecoming most recently as a mystery character only coded as Michelle, has been revealed as this movie’s Mary Jane Watson. HeroicHollywood first reported the announcement. Oh my stars! As you recall, MJ is Peter Parker’s primary love interest. She has appeared in every known version of Spider-Man, typically a red-head beauty, fierce, fun, and a staple character to the series.
Zendaya: Talent and Diversity
Zendaya Coleman has done a lot to prove her skill set in her blossoming career, and being cast in an MCU film is a huge boost. We know her from Disney shows Shake It Up and Zapped, she is also a recording artist.
Zendaya is a talented young star, so there is little doubt that she will do the role justice. In casting Zendaya as Mary Jane Watson, Spiderman: Homecoming strays from the cannon caucasian representation of the character. However, Mary Jane is not the only character that has been cast/written in a different ethnicity, in the MCU as well as the DCU. Tessa Thompson was selected to play Valkyrie in Thor:Ragnarok, and in DC, Hal Jordan/Green Lantern has been interchangeably Caucasian and African-American throughout the universes. Will this resolve the issues with diversity in the entertainment industry? Provided that this is the goal of the MCU, then it is possible, but time will tell.
Spider-man: Homecoming is set to release Summer 2017.
What do you think? Do you like the casting choice? Also, how do you think they will incorporate the Spider-man story into the MCU franchise? Who do you expect to make a cameo appearance in Spider-man: Homecoming?
